Burn ’Em Brewing hosted its ninth annual “4/20ish” celebration today, Friday, April 19, featuring an itinerary of live music, a dynamic light show, and a tap list showcasing its “dankiest” and “hoppiest” beer selections.
"Today is '4/20ish' where we are celebrating cannabis,” said Tyler Ream, Burn 'Em Brewing’s social media manager and bartender. “Of course, cannabis is not legal in Indiana, but we have a lot of live music just celebrating it. They do terpene-infused beers that are built like cannabis strains or built like the flavor. The ingredients are derived from pine trees and fruits, and are added to beer to make some super dank drinks."
The “4/20ish” event offered live entertainment, unique craft beers, and a thrilling atmosphere. From 1:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., Burn’ Em Brewing’s Taproom set the stage for exciting local band performances, including St. Joe Jack (1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.), Watershed Ramblers (3 p.m. - 4 p.m.), HAZM (4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.), Stealin’ the Farm (6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.) and Mr. Blotto (8 p.m. to 10 p.m). The final three acts featured the “epic lighting” experience through the Hydrosonic Light Show.
“People are going to have a blast,” said Steve Murray, co-owner of Burn ’Em Brewing. “We have this amazing light show done old-school with liquid lights on the projector. It is the first time we have ever booked the light show since this band got started. It is all really wild.”
Attendees sampled various Burn ’Em Brewing’s beers, including two 4:20 specials: a 5.5% ABV Citra Pale Ale with Sour Tangie Terpenes and a 6.5% West Coast IPA infused with Mango Kush Terpenes. The brewery proudly shared other current offerings, including: the Turbulent Juice Hazy DIPA, the CaCaw Dank DIPA, the Scary Cheery Sour Ale and the Hopfen Horseman German-style Pilsner dry-hopped with Necataron and Sabro hops.
“We really like to keep this community of live music going,” said Murray. “All of us here have been fans of this music for our whole lives. We love having the backroom around for us to give these groups this spot.”
In addition to energetic performances, the “4/20ish” celebration offers a relaxed jam band vibe, complete with cheaper beer prices. Attendees were encouraged to support the local, live music and take the opportunity to browse and appreciate the local art and culture.
“The event has been great,” said Alice Evert, a local potter and long-time acquaintance of the owner. “All of my friends are here and everyone is so supportive and welcoming. With Burn ‘Em Brewing, I always feel like I have been in good company and a welcoming family.”
Since 2013, Burn’ Em Brewing has remained committed to providing a lively and exciting atmosphere for all. Located at 1215 East 2nd Street in Michigan City, Burn’ Em Brewing has blossomed from a homebrewing group into a full-fledged restaurant and brewery. The establishment values local ingredients and community engagement. With a brewing philosophy of “Comforting the disturbed and disturbing the comfortable,” Burn ’Em Brewing is happy to be creative in all their ventures— and the unofficial holiday of cannabis culture is no exception.
“The event has been great and groovy,” said Attendee Timay Sife. “The atmosphere is so great, the food is on point and the beer is so good.”
