Bring in Your Ugly Lamps to Win a “Major Award”

Leg-LampEntries can be “Born Ugly” or “Made Ugly”

Enter to win a leg lamp from the holiday movie classic “A Christmas Story.” Entries for the Ugly Lamp Contest will be accepted Nov. 4 through Nov. 20 at the Indiana Welcome Center. Lamps can be dropped off during normal business hours Monday through Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In the 1983 holiday film, Mr. Parker wins a leg lamp as a “major award” from a contest in the newspaper. Mr. Parker proudly displays the lamp in the family’s living room window until Mrs. Parker accidentally breaks it. Leg lamps have been a popular feature of the movie ever since.

Visitors may vote on the ugliest lamp from two categories: "Born Ugly" and "Made Ugly." Voting will run Nov. 21 through Dec. 16 and winners will be announced on Dec. 17 at the Indiana Welcome Center. All entries will be displayed through Jan. 6 and can be claimed between Jan. 7 and Jan. 11 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Ugly Lamp Contest is part of the “A Christmas Story” Comes Home exhibit at the Indiana Welcome Center from Nov. 9 to Jan. 5. The Indiana Welcome Center is located at the intersection of I-80/94 and Kennedy Avenue South in Hammond; only 30 minutes from downtown Chicago and two hours north of Indianapolis.
