Become a Dementia Friend in September during World Alzheimer’s Month

September 10, 2019- Dementia is scary for people who are diagnosed with the condition, and it’s scary for their loved ones. If your family hasn’t been impacted personally, you probably know someone who is struggling with memory loss. Or maybe you’ve noticed someone at the grocery store who looks confused or has forgotten what they have come in for. We can turn away, or we can do something to help.

REAL Services and partner CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions, a nonprofit that is leading the Dementia Friends Indiana movement, is challenging Hoosiers to register 1,000 new Dementia Friends during September in recognition of World Alzheimer’s Month.

What is a Dementia Friend? It’s someone who wants to make a positive difference for people impacted by dementia through increased awareness and support. Once you understand the signs of dementia and its impact on a person’s life, you are encouraged to do small things that help those living with dementia feel more included and connected in the community.

Becoming a Dementia Friend is easy –you can attend an in-person Become A Friend Workshop. Contact Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana to find a session or to schedule one for your organization www.alzni.org or 574-232-4121.
