Hamann is one of three Indiana educators considered for the 2021 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Math and Science teaching
Amy Hamann, STEM teacher/coordinator at Barker Middle School, was recognized at an honorary luncheon in Indianapolis on Tuesday as an Indiana finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).
This prestigious award is the nation’s highest honor awarded to K-12 educators in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science - annually recognizing educators from all 50 states.
Hamann is one of only three Indiana science and math educators chosen for this award, and will now be considered at the national level. State finalist PAEMST applications have been forwarded to the National Committee who will select one math and one science teacher for the prestigious award from each state.
The White House will announce the 2021 PAEMST awardees at a later date.
This award recognizes teachers who “have both deep content knowledge of the subjects they teach and the ability to motivate and enable students to be successful in those areas,” according to PAEMST.org.
In attendance at Tuesday’s luncheon were special guests from the Indiana Department of Education, Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Hoosier Association of Science Teachers Inc. (HASTI), PAEMST State Coordinator, and former PAEMST Math and Science Awardees from Indiana. Hamann attended the luncheon along with her husband, Derek Hamann, and Barker Middle School Principal Lucas Snyder.
This is Hamann’s second time being considered for the PAEMST award, as she was also recognized at the state level in 2013.
