Barker Middle School hosted the 2nd quarter "Parent Invite to Lunch" to celebrate "Parent Day" for American Education Week, November 13-17, 2017. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or any adult advocate is invited to have lunch in the gym with their students and bring in an outside lunch. Participants are also invited to participate in a STEM Challenge during the lunch which infuses Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Math strategies.
Attendees were encouraged to take supplies home for their families to conduct a friendly STEM Challenge competition at home. The STEM Challenge for the 2nd quarter lunch was "Straw Towers". The mission of the challenge was to create the tallest tower possible using ONLY a dozen plastic straws. The tower must be completely freestanding. Scissors could be used to manipulate the straws to build the towers. One hundred and ten adult advocates attended the event.
