Autumn Means Apples

AppleWhile apples are now "in season" all year long, autumn and apples still have a strong connection for most people.

Apple growers associations offer the following tips to get the most enjoyment out of your fruity treasures:

Selection

  • An apple's skin should be shiny, not dull. This tip's important; dull appearing apples won't be crisp and tasty.
  • Your apples should be firm and free of bruises and punctures.

Preparation

Prepare apple dishes just before serving to minimize browning (oxidation). Protect cut apples from oxidation by dipping them into a solution of one part citrus juice and three parts water.

Here are some more tips:

  • There are about 7,500 varieties of apples that have been cateloged by horticulturists. Only a handful are available in your supermarket.
  • Apples are harvested between August and early November. Advanced storage technology keeps them fresh year-round.
  • There are usually five seeds in an average apple.
  • A medium sized apple contains 5 grams of fiber, 20 percent of the recommended daily allowance.
