Did you know that our mainstreet is famous? The Lincoln Highway-- including the stretch La Porteans know as "Lincolnway"-- was the first named automobile road that crossed the U.S. from coast to coast. Join us as Joyce Chambers, from the Indiana Lincoln Highway Association, gives a multi-media presentation on the fascinating history of this great road. Find out how this important highway developed, and how its growth has impacted Indiana-- and our nation.

Local Author Visit: Walt Ward

Walt Ward, a local author who recently published his book Defying Gravity, will be at the Main Library to speak on growing up in the La Porte area in the 1950s, and how it influenced his book.

Kankakee Marsh: Everglades of the North
August 12, 6pm at Union Mills
Less than a century ago, nearly a million acres of Northern Indiana resembled Florida’s Everglades. The Grand Kankakee Marsh was home to some of the highest concentrations of wildlife on Earth, with flocks of waterfowl so dense they darkened the sky. Today less than 5% of the marsh survives. See the award-winning documentary "Everglades of the North: The Story of the Grand Kankakee Marsh", and learn about the fascinating history of this region from the people who helped make this important movie happen.

The Internet has a lot of music, videos, and television programs for free! The trick is knowing where to look for it, how to obtain it, and what devices you'll need to enjoy it. Join us to learn how to access all the free online media you've been missing!

Tail Waggin’ Tutors
August 1, 4pm-5pm at Main
Students in grades K-8 may register to read with one of our canine tutors. A relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere is provided, which allows students to practice the skill of reading. By sitting down next to and reading to the dog, all threats of being judged are put aside. The child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Reading improves because the child is practicing the skill of reading, building self-esteem, and associating reading with something pleasant.

Babytime Storytime—Ages 0-2: August 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 , 10am at Main
Daytime Storytime—Ages 3-5: August 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, 10am at Main
The summer reading program has ended but storytimes continue. Enjoy stories, music, activities and crafts that will engage your child. Storytimes are a great way to encourage your child's love of books and reading. Take advantage of the Play, Grow, Read Early Literacy Center before and after the program.

Family Vision Screenings at Hanna

Stop by the Hanna branch library during Hanna Fest for a FREE vision screening, courtesy of the Lions Club. The screenings are open to all ages. Also, enter to win a gift basket!

Summer’s Final Fling
August 15, 2pm-3pm at Coolspring
Join us at the Coolspring Branch for a family luau! We'll have beach stories, play games, and create sand art. Come in your Hawaiian shirt and sunglasses and be ready to have some fun!

Nighttime Storytime

Join us for a special nighttime storytime with our friends from Dunebrook! Sing, play, read, and laugh your way to early literacy with this interactive storytime. Intended for children ages 0-5, with a caretaker.
