Artspace Uptown Artist Lofts Community Room Moves Forward

artspace-warren-buildingThe Michigan City Common Council finance committee unanimously recommended approval to the full council to fund the 7th Floor community room renovation at The Warren Building Artspace Uptown Artist Lofts.

The 7th Floor community room will be used for a variety of events that are in line with our city revitalization objectives including art related events, non-for profit activities, First Friday exhibitions, and city meeting and events.

The community room will be an exciting venue to be used by the community. Appropriately located at the top of our city and in the heart of our downtown, it will be an added feature to the already funded $12.5 million dollar rehab of the Warren Building as artist live work spaces which is expected to begin construction next month.

The ordinance for the amount of $300,000 from the Boyd riverboat fund will fund the renovation and this project is expected to make a significant economic and cultural impact to our city. The ordinance is being sponsored by Councilmen Chris Schwanke, Tim Bietry, and Rich Murphy.

The Redevelopment Commission has also approved the funding of the Pedestrian Alley marketplace, so the 7th Floor is the last step in the process of a "Grand Slam" Uptown Artist Lofts project that is lock step with the Lake Michigan Gateway Implementation Strategy.

We need your help to voice your support so that our full City Council votes YES for this exciting opportunity for Michigan City and creates a important community feature at the top of the iconic Warren Building on Franklin Street.

The final vote is expected to take place on December 2 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Please attend this important meeting and voice your support.
