Art From the Heart

As the day of love approaches, some are creating Valentines for more than their significant others. La Porte High School’s French Club created a multitude of Valentine’s for the local Ruth Sabin Home, an assisted living establishment, Thursday, February 7th.

French Club President Abbi Fryer explained, “I think making the valentine’s is a good way for us to reach out and connect with the community. The valentines are just a simple way to brighten up the residents’ day!”

The making of the valentines also gave the French Club a reason to get together and practice their speaking skills. The group munched on popcorn and jammed to relaxing French tunes. Using the shades of Valentine’s Day and heart-shaped doilies the club let the creativity run wild. Each valentine was customized with an affectionate French phrase for the residents such as, “Joyeux Jour de St. Valentine!” The atmosphere was fun, festive, and full of French chatter. But the purpose of the event all goes back to bringing some amour to the Ruth Sabin residents.

“It’s something be commended. It is great for the French Club students to do something nice for the Ruth Sabin Home members, who truly love the valentines,” club sponsor Joyce Koselke commented.

This is not the only community service project the club performs for the Ruth Sabin Home. This past November the club also delivered hand-made paper turkeys to the home for Thanksgiving festivities. The club also remains active throughout the year holding French chats at various local cafes, movie nights in French with crepes, matches of patanque (an outdoor French game), game nights, and breakfasts full of French goodies. The purpose of the club is to bring the students together in a French speaking environment, to have fun, and delve into the culture.

“I have a deeper appreciation for the culture because of the club. We are able to explore unique aspects in a fun environment. Not only that, but I also get to serve the community and enjoy time with my friends,” Amanda Kuiphoff, another member, exclaimed.
