Hard to believe, but it's been more than two months since our transition to Porter Regional Hospital. So with the goal of broadcasting some 'new' best memories, we took a trip to our expansive Emergency Department to hear from their extraordinary staff.
Our first best memory is from Dane Thomas, RN, who works in the Porter Regional Hospital Emergency Department and is in an active member of Porter's nursing leadership group. Dane shared, "In the ED we don't usually see the results of our hard efforts, but in this case I was able to feel that instant gratification, and I loved every bit of it."
Here's one of Dane's most memorable patient experiences. "I was treating a stroke patient, and it was determined that we had very little time to administer the clot busting agent. The neurologist read the CT and gave me the go ahead. I went into the room where many family members were praying for the best outcome. Within one minute after the initial bolus/drip started, my patient became very spry, cracking jokes and acting as he once did. The transformation was remarkable and happened so quickly. To share those emotions with the family is a special time for a nurse. I think this was one of the single greatest highlights in my entire career, and it reinforced why I pursued the field of Emergency Medicine."
