American RENOLIT supports abuse survivors for the holidays through The Stepping Stone Shelter

Once every quarter, American RENOLIT finds ways to give back to the community by working with longstanding community partners and finding new organizations that enrich the community. This year, American RENOLIT has donated time and resources to The Pax Center and La Porte County Animal Shelter and sponsored the Dragon Boat Races and Santa Parade in La Porte.

“We do a lot with the Pax Center here in La Porte. We've cooked and served meals and made donations to them. At least once a year, we partner with them to cook and serve a meal at their Center,” said American RENOLIT Human Resources Director Melissa Gruber. “Pretty regularly – once a year or so – we'll do something for the animal shelter here in La Porte County, too. We have a lot of animal lovers here, so we all want to support those dogs and cats that are looking for their forever home by collecting food, litter, toys and snacks, as well as making financial donations and sponsoring pet adoptions.”

Every holiday season, American RENOLIT looks for a special way to give back by committing to matching donations to a worthy organization. This year, the company decided to support The Stepping Stone Shelter, which is the only 24-hour domestic violence shelter in La Porte County. The Stepping Stone Shelter has aided hundreds of domestic abuse and sexual assault survivors each year for 40 years.

“The decision to support The Stepping Stone Shelter started with our social committee,” Gruber said. “People who came to the meeting nominated an organization that they think would be a fitting one to donate to. That group then narrowed it down to three options through our voting process. We put all of them on the board, determined the top three that got the most votes, and put the top three on our Motivosity system that goes out to all employees as a survey. The employees then selected which one we were going to raise money for this year. It is a way for everybody to be involved in helping us select who we're going to support each year.”

American RENOLIT employees donate money and the company matches their donations. To support all the great work happening at The Stepping Stone Shelter, American RENOLIT made a donation of $3,744 to the shelter.  United Way of LaPorte County and United Way of Northwest Indiana offered a 1:1 grant matching opportunity during the holiday season. Gruber was thrilled to discover that this grant matching opportunity would stretch the donation even further thanks to United Way of LaPorte Co. and United Way of Northwest Indiana.

Getting its employees involved is key to American RENOLIT’s end-of-year giveback – it is a direct action that shows that the company is there not only to make a profit but to make a difference.

“I think that it really helps the community know that we're here and that we are investing our time and money into local charitable organizations,” Gruber said. “I think it's also good for the employees because by participating in the community events, they really develop a good connection to it.”
