Bookmarks at the Museum presents Whistling Past the Graveyard

Join LuAnne DePriest for Bookmarks at the Museum on Thursday, February 20, at 2 pm at the Westchester Township History Museum, 700 W. Porter Avenue, Chesterton. Refreshments will be served.

Whistling Past the Graveyard is written by Hoosier author Susan Crandall. It's the summer of 1963. Nine-year-old Starla, born to teenage parents in Mississippi and being raised by her strict paternal grandmother, sneaks out to see the Fourth of July parade even though she is grounded. Her fear that Mamie will actually send her to reform school prompts her to run away from home. Offered a ride by a black woman, Eula, who is traveling with a white baby, she heads to Nashville.

Encountering misadventures along the way, accompanied by conversation with Eula, opens Starla's eyes to the harsh realities of the segregated south of 1963 and to the truth that family is not always related by blood. The author, Susan Crandall, will join DePriest – weather permitting – at the Thursday review. Crandall will discuss the writing of her book, and will have copies available for purchase and for signing.

Bookmarks takes place on the third Thursday of the month at the museum and on the third Friday of the month at Michigan City Public Library, 100 E. 4th St., Michigan City.

It is not necessary to read the book before attending. Books are available at both Thomas and Hageman Libraries. The museum, a free cultural and educational service of Westchester Public Library, is open to the public Wednesday-Sunday from 1-5 p.m. or by appointment. Call 983-9715 for more information.
