Active in NWI: When it’s Just Too Cold Outside

It’s flippin’ cold so no workout outside. You could head to the gym, but something s might be closed due to the weather. So you’re staying home.

Nothing worse than wanting to work out and not being able to.

If you have a home gym, then you’re set. But what if you are without workout equipment? Then it’s time to get resourceful.

Do chores – getting moving even the slightest bit will burn calories. Bonus: a clean house.

Use alternative weights – soup cans, cinder blocks, small children (be careful) can help you get your reps in. Just don’t drop your makeshift on the ground like people do at a regular gym.

Use your own body weight – do a circuit of squats, lunges, push-ups, crunches, planks, etc. Do each exercise for a certain number of seconds or reps, then repeat the series two more times.

Use your environment – some exercises can’t be done without a little help. If you can’t do regular push-ups, use the steps on stairs or a counter top to ease your way into them. Do wall-sits. Grab on to a sturdy chair or the underside of a door, or the legs of a cooperating family member to do lying leg raises. Bonus: if a family member is helping you, have them push your legs down when you raise them up for an added challenge.

Turn on the TV – stream a workout program on TV and get to sweating. Move all of your furniture and fragile things out of the way so that you can have room to move.
