A Note from the Michiana Humane Society: A Dog with a Purpose

Michiana-Humane-Society-A-Dog-with-a-PurposeA week ago "Delilah" arrived at the shelter as a lost dog. Bloodhounds are known flight risks because instinct tells them to stay on a scent at all expense. That makes them terrific working dogs. But as pets they need experienced owners.

No owner showed up to claim her.

A guard at the Westville Correctional Center saw her "lost dog" post on Facebook, and it turned out the prison was in the market for a new bloodhound.

So the K-9 Team came for a visit. They tested Delilah's instincts and she demonstrated her tracking chops. And still no owner came for her.

Every dog has a purpose. Most are good pets, but some have a higher calling. Today Delilah was adopted by the Westville Correctional Center K-9 Team and entered their training program with her new handler, Ashlee. The K-9 team are called on to find missing people of all types -- children, seniors with Alzheimers, and the occasional criminal. With a job to do, Delilah will excel.

Good luck, Officer Delilah! We know you'll do us proud!
