A LEAP Member Spotlight: Northwest Health

A strong healthcare system is essential to a community’s quality of life, especially in terms of  providing access to medical care to area residents and contributing to the economic health of the community overall. La Porte Hospital’s rich history of meeting the community’s needs is expanding as it evolves to the new Northwest Health healthcare system and opens the new Northwest Health – La Porte at 1331 State Street, La Porte on October 24, 2020.  Yet, as it grows, it’s care for the medical needs of the community and contributions to the community’s economic health remain.

Northwest Health - La Porte

Providing medical care to Northwest Indiana requires teamwork of the highest level, and Northwest Health - La Porte’s boards of trustees, physicians, caregivers and volunteers work together to provide this care every day.  Northwest Health - La Porte, has delivered high quality healthcare to the residents of La Porte County and neighboring areas for more than 120 years, most recently as La Porte Hospital. Over the course of last year, Northwest Health - La Porte touched more than 360,000 lives, providing care for patients who were admitted to the hospital, in the emergency room and at outpatient visits.

Emergency department physicians and staff saw more than 22,500 patients seeking an urgent level of care. The hospital also cared for more than 4,700 hospitalized patients. The Birthing & Family Care Center helped bring more than 600 beautiful new babies into the world.

Northwest Health - La Porte’s quality of care has been recognized by respected agencies and national accrediting bodies. Most recently it was named as one of only three cardiac electrophysiology (EP) labs in the State of Indiana accredited by the prestigious American College of Cardiology and has the only accredited EP lab in the South Bend and Northwest Indiana area.

While Northwest Health - La Porte focuses on meeting patient needs, it also supports the broader Northwest Indiana region economically. Last year, the organization provided more than $11 million in charity and uncompensated care to the area’s most in need residents. Civic resources and services are also supported by the more than $11 million in property and sales taxes paid.

As the communities it serves change over time, Northwest Health - La Porte has always adjusted its services in response. The most recent example of this is construction of the new Northwest Health - La Porte hospital which opens on October 24, 2020. This new hospital was built in response to anticipated growth in the county, especially the senior population, and to provide the newest technology and best practice healing environment for patients. Every area of the new Northwest Health - La Porte including intensive care, cardiology, surgery, lab, diagnostic imaging, Birthing & Family Care Center, emergency room, and their accredited Chest Pain Center was designed with the needs of patients and visitors as the focus.

In addition to meeting community needs, the new Northwest Health - La Porte was also built to meet the needs of the many new providers it has recruited to La Porte County. To expand access to quality primary and specialty care, Northwest Health recruited more than 20 new providers over the last two years. These providers include obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Michael Allen, gastroenterologist Dr. Eric Steinberg, hematologist/oncologist Dr. Kalid Adab, certified nurse midwife, Suzanne Hanna, general surgeon Dr. Blake Hood and internal medicine physician Dr. Maribonn Tiangson.

Colleagues within Northwest Health - La Porte like to say that compassionate care is their calling. This was especially evident this year as they continue to do their part to control the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and treat patients diagnosed with the virus.  The hospital’s compassion along with conscientious attention to infection prevention has shown the hospital’s frontline staff to be among the best in the area. These local healthcare heroes take pride in serving the residents of La Porte County and surrounding areas with some of the best medical care and services in Northern Indiana.

Northwest Health - La Porte enjoys its important partnership with the La Porte Economic Advancement Partnership (LEAP). Ashely Dickinson, Chief Executive Officer of both Northwest Health – La Porte and Northwest Health – Starke said, “LEAP has been a valued partner and involved in the plans for the new Northwest Health- La Porte hospital providing input and advice as plans were made to keep our hospital, an important resource, in downtown La Porte. Our new system looks forward to continuing to support LEAP’s efforts to develop the La Porte community and attract new employers while also improving a great quality of life for La Porte residents.”
