A La Porte County Life in the Spotlight: Sarah Brown

A La Porte County Life in the Spotlight: Sarah Brown

Life is about balance. It is about finding that perfect compromise between work and personal life, and that is a balance that many struggle with every day. For La Porte resident Sarah Brown, that secret rests within a successful marriage and a strong partnership with her husband, Jason.

“He’s always been very supportive,” Brown said of her husband of twelve years. “That’s been one of the most important things to me. We just work really well together as a couple.”

Originally from Rochester, Sarah spent much of her adult life in Peru, Indiana. She and her husband currently call La Porte home, along with their children, Mackenzie, 7, Madelin, 8, Allison, 11, and three more children from her previous marriage.

Described as a dedicated career woman, Sarah works as a financial advisor for Edward Jones, where she enjoys helping people find ways to meet both their short-term and long-term financial goals. She became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ last year and also recently received her Accredited Asset Management Specialist certification.

Brown is also heavily involved with the local community.

“I was pretty integrated with the community back in Peru, so once we moved up here, that was one of the first things that I looked for up here in La Porte, as well,” Brown said, adding that she understands the tremendous value of community involvement.

“Especially in moving to a new community,” said Brown. “You want to be able to meet people and you want to be able to learn as much as you can about that community and what is most important to the people who live there.”

Before becoming a financial advisor, Brown worked in education, teaching 8th-grade science.

“When we moved up here, one of the first things I did was participate in a year-long leadership class here in La Porte county, so it was really a change to me, to be the student rather than the facilitator of the class.”

That class helped lead to Brown becoming involved with the La Porte Jaycees.

“They do so much for the community! From the La Porte 4th of July Parade to the Deserving Children’s Shopping Corps, and so much more. Participating in things like that, she said she has learned so much and met so many people.

From there, Brown also became involved with the Kiwanis Club of La Porte.

“Due to my background in teaching, it has always been important to me to be involved in working with children. Kiwanis really does cater to the needs of local youths. Whether it’s being involved in community events, or just reading a book to a third grader.”

Brown served as president of the Kiwanis Club of La Porte in 2019.

Not one to rest on her heels, Brown also joined Women in Leadership where she serves on the board. She is also the Ambassador Chair for the La Porte Chamber of Commerce.

“We are always looking for new members, and we’re happy to mentor them and advise them on the benefits of becoming a member,” said Brown.

As for her advice on achieving the perfect work/life balance?

“The secret is having a partner who is very supportive,” Brown said. “My husband is a teacher and a wrestling coach, so he’s on the kid’s schedule. Being able to work together, to have that partnership where we are able to communicate and manage everything is what makes it all possible.”
