Kyla Webb always knew that music and performing was her path. After years of curating a life centered around those values, Webb is living her dream as a musician and performer.
With her parents introducing Webb to The Beatles and the blues, music became a passion at a young age. It wasn't long before Webb discovered her own musical inspiration.
“I fell in love with Dolly Parton when I was 2 years old,” Webb said. “I became obsessed with music in every capacity.”
Passion for music fueled Webb’s desire to learn the guitar and strengthen her vocals. In addition to the guitar, Webb has a history of playing the mandolin and the banjo. Now, Webb is the lead singer of the band Skirt. She enjoys performing with her band at local spots around Michigan City. Webb’s country-influenced writing mixes with her band members' music taste, providing every audience with a unique sound.
“I write country songs and take them to the band. They're more influenced by funk and jazz; it's become this crazy amalgamation of sounds that really come together,” Webb said.
The process of writing music brings Webb clarity and peace. Even before performing or sharing her songs, the words serve a purpose for her.
“I've always written to deal with any sort of emotion; it's a great emotional outlet,” Webb said. “I recommend it to people all the time.”
To follow her acting dreams, Webb attended Columbia College Chicago; she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in theater. Webb’s dedication to the craft has brought her all over the country.
“I used to make short silent films and do clown performances,” Webb said. “I got booked all over the country.”
During these performances, Webb developed a strong muscle for entertaining a crowd. She mastered lively skills, such as the art of juggling. Webb’s stage presence and exceptional artistry has only gotten stronger, allowing her to participate in a variety of events. A recent source of pride for Webb was her performing at a live band burlesque show at the House of Blues in Chicago.
Webb also finds time to do freelance bartending and enjoys designing posters to advertise for local businesses. She loves being in nature and going to concerts with her wife.
“We go see live music all the time,” Webb said. “We also love nature; a big reason we moved to Michigan City was to be by the dunes.”
While nature influenced her move to Michigan City, Webb stays for more than the proximity to the dunes; the culture of the entire town inspires her.
“I appreciate the people in Michigan City; they're really authentic, genuine people. Everyone can be exactly who they are,” Webb said. “That's what I love about living here.”
As a dedicated artist living in an accepting town, Webb encourages every community to stand united in their support of local talent.
“Please continue to invest in artists; go to venues where musicians are playing live,” Webb said. “We need to support them, as well as the venues that support them. Artists make communities vibrant and interesting.”
