A La Porte County Life in the Spotlight: Kevin Scott

Kevin-ScottWhat a small world we live in! I discovered -while in the middle of the interview- that I went to college with this individual. Who knew that I would get the privilege of meeting him again under such pleasant circumstances? Ladies and gentlemen meet Kevin Scott; this week’s La Porte County Life in the Spotlight.

Scott was born and raised in Chesterton, IN. From a young age he was the athletic sort, and he played baseball as well as other sports to feed his love of athleticism.

“I can’t sit down for too long,” Scott said with a laugh.

After he graduated from high school, Scott attended the University of Southern Indiana and PNC where he majored in Communications (this is where our paths crossed –we share the same alma mater and major and). There too, he played baseball.

From college, Scott went in the direction of sales. He had a few different sales positions –including a stint with ValpoLife a few years back- after which he become the athletic director for St. Patrick School in Chesterton. Scott worked in youth programs at the Valpo YMCA and the Dunes Learning Center. He came to Anytime Fitness in Michigan City as an H2I (Hired to Inspire). What Scott does is manage the club, give tours, manage contracts and sign-ups, help members learn how to use equipment, marketing and other managerial duties.

“I love it. I come and workout every morning,” Scott said. “The people are great here. My bosses are awesome. They give me flexibility to do things the way I think will work, and all the core beliefs and values that they have here are the same as mine. It’s awesome to believe in what you do at work.”

I couldn’t agree more.

Outside of work, Scott remains active within the community. He coaches baseballl camps with his brother as well as other youth programs, he’s a big supporter of shopping local, and he spends as much time as he can out in the Michigan City community.

“It’s just an awesome place all around,” Scott said, “It’s a hidden wonder small town feel with a city and a lake nearby. There are endless things to do and people are friendlier here.”

In his free time Scott is a family man. He likes to watch his niece play hockey as well as other familial activities. He also likes to keep active by playing sports and working out.

In the future, Scott hopes to become as certified personal trainer. He wants to stay in the area and be near his family and stay involved in the community.

I asked Scott if there was any advice that he wanted to pass on. There was. He thought long and hard and then doled out this gem for me to present to you, readers.

“So I would have to say that my advice that I have been given is from my parents as well as one of my baseball coaches growing up who said, ‘control the things you can control’.” Scott said. “This was used in baseball as well as life for me. In baseball, you need to have a short term memory if you throw a bad pitch or make an error. You need to be ready to go 100 percent focused on the next play and only control the things you can control. I also think that this one goes with life and what my parents taught me. Really, think about it, if you only worry about the things you can control, the rest of the minor details slip through and leave only what’s important, and what you can control. At one of my past jobs at the Dunes Learning Center where I was a Cabin Counselor, we preached P.M.A or positive mental attitude. PMA, all the way!”

Scott’s positive person is contagious. I couldn’t help but be happily affected by it. A positive mental attitude when felt on the inside and expressed on the outside can get you quite far in life. Here’s a perfect example with Kevin Scott: A La Porte County Life in the Spotlight.
