A La Porte County Life in the Spotlight: Katlyn Slater

They say sometimes it is better to be lucky than good, but why not be both if you can? Katlyn Slater has been able to meet the perfect balance of luck and skill when it comes to her career and life.

Slater has worked at Harley-Davidson of Michigan City for the last 12 years, now holding the position of finance manager. While the career move may not have been her plan from the beginning (shortly after getting hired at Harley-Davidson she passed her real estate exam), Slater is grateful for the life she has built there.

“My favorite thing about this job is that it just feels different, and it's a lot of fun,” Slater said. “I love all of my co-workers and customers. I feel really proud to say that I work at Harley-Davidson.”

Slater has spent her entire life in La Porte and is proud of her home. She may not be a fan of the cold but said she can’t picture herself anywhere else, for now at least.

“I love the area. There are a lot of great things and people here, and it's truly wonderful,” she said. “I don't plan on going anywhere else anytime soon, but eventually it would be nice to be able to get away from the cold and go to Florida or somewhere else warm.”

Slater said she has the perfect work/life balance. Her part-time position at Harley-Davidson allows her to spend time with her kids and the rest of her family. With her husband working as a La Porte firefighter, the flexible hours come in handy.

“I am very thankful for my family. They have always been such a big inspiration,” she said. “It also means a lot that Harley-Davidson was so willing to work with me; That's not always easy to find. They have been loyal and good to me, and I want to do whatever it takes to make sure I return the favor.”

There is life outside of Harley-Davidson, of course. Slater volunteers in the community, helping at local schools and St. Jude House. Her biggest and probably most proud accomplishment, though, is helping keep the environment clean.

“My daughters hate litter on the side of the road,” Slater said. “Sometimes we have a little golf cart we like to ride up and down the road and pick up as much as we can. One day we were able to even fill up three full bags.”

They also like kicking dirt around in the baseball diamond. Both Slater and her husband help with their daughters’ tee-ball league, and they know the competition is fierce. Slater gets very intense during game time, but no matter what, she is always able to have a fun time.

“I love the feeling of being out there and supporting my daughters,” she said. “My favorite memory was this past summer, an all-girls team versus an all-boys team. It was a great game to see, and my daughter scored the winning run. I was just so happy to see it.”

Life is fairly perfect for Slater, save one thing she hopes to accomplish in due time.

“When the day comes, I would just love to take the time to travel to all the places I have ever wanted. Hawaii would be the first place on that list.”
