A La Porte County Life in the Spotlight: Greg Handel

Greg-HandelIf La Porte High School Principal Gregory Handel has carried any mentality throughout his life and career in education, it is that all kids are inherently good.

“I believe there is no such thing as a bad kid. I think every kid is good, sometimes they just make poor decisions,” he said.

Handel is an icon in the halls of La Porte High School. He roams the halls clad in a full suit and tie and ready to make a friendly joke or remark at every turn. It is this unique bond with students that sets him apart from other educators and is prized by both the students and Handel himself. He said his absolute favorite thing about being principal at La Porte is the kids.

Walking into his office, one can instantly conclude why Handel is a student favorite. He has a bulletin board smattered with student photos, a flying pig wearing a Harley Davidson jacket suspended from the ceiling and a wig of black curls nestled in the corner. Even as the times change, the students remain a constant.

“In my years here I don’t think the kids have changed at all,” he said. “Even if other things change the kids always stay the same.”

Handel, who was born in Cleveland, Ohio, attended Strongsville High School before heading to Evanston, Ill. to pursue a degree at Northwestern University. During his enjoyable time at Northwestern University, he did not anticipate becoming a principal but focused on becoming a physical education teacher and a coach. However, after teaching health, he discovered a desire to hold a principal position.

His first time as a principal was a valuable learning experience, but he wanted to a chance to learn more about the holistic aspects of being a principal. After learning a great deal more about the role, including personnel and finances, he stepped up to the plate again as principal at La Porte High School with much success.

Handel’s broad range of experiences has led him to his position today. He worked in many positions such as an assistant principal, coach, health teacher, stock boy and even stepped in as a the dance team coach when the team was in need. He takes this multitalented, hands-on approach to his life outside of La Porte High School. Gardening, working on cars and building count as the hobbies he enjoys. However, in recent years Handel has a new group of kids to focus on- his grandchildren. In the future, he is looking forward to slowing down and enjoying life.

“I hope to someday be able to retire, rest, and spend more time with my grandchildren,” he said.
