A La Porte County Life in the Spotlight: Carrie Campbell

CarrieCampbellBorn in La Porte, raised in Union Mills, Carrie Campbell has always felt a strong sense of dedication to her family and her community.

Graduating from Indiana University South Bend with a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies and a concentration in Gender and Women’s Studies, Campbell immediately returned home to put her studies to good use.

Joining her family’s business, Hatfield’s Pest Control, back in 2005, Campbell looks forward to the opportunity to continue the legacy of her family business. Hatfield Pest Control, located in La Porte, has been offering a leading pest control service since 1944 when Dean Hatfield began his career in pest control at the Kingsbury Ordinance Plant during WWII.

Now owned by the Campbell family, Greg Campbell will soon be taking a step back in the business, allowing his daughter Carrie to take on a larger role in running and maintaining the company, which Carrie is very excited about.

Currently, Carrie is the General Manager at Hatfield Pest Control where she has many responsibilities including overseeing all phases of daily operation. Campbell makes sure routes are getting done and run efficiently. She also makes sure that their office manager has everything they need to get their daily job done. Then, in the spring, summer and fall, Campbell also goes out on calls, taking care of her customers.

“It’s really a labor of love,” Campbell said. “I love my job and working with my family. I love being able to educate people on the different pests in the area or in their homes and businesses and how to prevent them. You can see people changing and learning as you are talking to them, and that’s really fun.”

In her spare time, Campbell volunteers with various organizations. Both she and her dad sit on the Indiana Pest Management Board. She is also very involved with the La Porte County Jaycees, where she has been volunteering since 2012. Currently, she serves as the President of the organization, doing a little bit of everything.

“There is so much to say and so much that we do behind the scenes that positively affects the community,” Campbell said. “It’s bigger than any of our members. It’s a mission that’s bigger than ourselves.”

One of her favorite things is when they take deserving children shopping around Christmas-time. Each child is given a set amount of money to buy things that they need, like coats and gloves and school supplies. When the children have some money left over, they are allowed to use it to purchase a toy for themselves.

“It has a hold of my heart in ways that I can’t describe,” Campbell said. “What’s really amazing is when they want to spend their left over money on their mom or dad or siblings instead of themselves.”

Campbell also serves as President of Stepping Stones Shelter for Women, and has been volunteering with them since 2012 as well.

“I love being able to see our clients gain their independence and get back out on their own in a safe environment with their children and becoming successful,” Campbell said.

In her free time, Campbell enjoys going to community events and seeing how everyone else is impacting the community.
