A La Porte County Life in the Spotlight: Brandy Krout

Following your dreams can be a daunting task. It can take a long time, determination, and patience for your progress to manifest into something truly wonderful. La Porte photographer Brandy Krout knows this all too well. After years of hard work, Krout has established herself as a renowned photographer in Northwest Indiana.

“I’ve always wanted to be a photographer, even when I was in elementary school,” Krout said. “It's something I have always loved and wanted to do. It took some time, but eventually, I became more experienced and more confident about myself and my skills.”

Krout describes photography as an art form. She started her career by taking landscape photos, taking particular interest in photographing old buildings and animals. As she developed herself as a photographer, she began taking photos of people as well. She especially likes to take photos of weddings, couples, and newborns.

“I like the idea of freezing something in time and capturing memories,” Krout said. “As a photographer, I feel that I can show people what they see in everyday life in a different kind of way.”

Krout further stated that she taught herself all ins-and-outs of photography and has attended a few online photography classes. She has even mentored a few photographers and is open to giving newcomers advice on how to begin their endeavors like good photo locations and how to operate a camera.

“When I started out as a photographer, I was pretty much on my own,” Krout said. “I’m not very competitive when it comes to my photography, so I’ll help out anyone if they ask.”

Krout stated that her advice to fellow photographers is to be consistent and take photos of what they love, not mimic the passions of others.

“Just keep taking thousands and thousands of pictures,” Krout said. “Do what you love and don’t ever try to fit into anyone else’s mold of what they think a photographer should be. Make your passions your own.”

“It feels great to be where I’m at today,” Krout said. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do for the longest time, but now I can confidently say that I do, and that I am following my dreams.”

In her free time, Krout loves spending time with her husband and three sons outdoors.
