5-in-1 Collection Held, Last Collection to Take Place October 19

recycle-greenNearly 500 residents recycled tires, refrigerators and more at the La Porte County Solid Waste District’s 5-in-1 collection Saturday.

The 5-in-1 collection is held twice a year at the La Porte County Fairgrounds, said recycling coordinator Nancy McVay. At these larger collections, the District accepts tires, appliances, electronics, textiles, and household hazardous waste. Confidential document shredding is also provided.

Some amounts of items recycled or accepted for proper disposal Saturday were:

  • 5,285 pounds of household batteries
  • 766 tires
  • 650 gallons of motor oil
  • 439 pounds of Sharps
  • 35 Freon-containing appliances (i.e. refrigerators, dehumidifiers)

People tell us they really appreciate the ‘one-stop shopping’ they can do at our larger collections,” McVay said. “They’re able to bring many items at once and be out of there within 15 minutes.”

Textile recycling was just added to the collections this year, so that portion is still catching on with residents, McVay said. The District has partnered with USAgain to recycle clothing, bedding, towels, shoes and other textiles. Items can be ripped, stained or otherwise damaged as long as they are clean.

The District will hold two more of these collections next year, McVay said. The District’s complete collection schedule for 2014 will be released in late February.

One more collection will be held this year only for household hazardous waste from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, outside of Kabelin Ace Hardware at Marquette Mall in Michigan City. It will be the last District collection for the year.
