Summer Learning Adventure at the La Porte County Public Library begins today, June 1 and runs until Friday, July 29. This year’s theme is “BUILD IT!” Kids, teens, and adults can sign up online at laportelibrary.org or at any La Porte County Public Library location.
The goal of the Summer Learning Adventure is to prevent the summer reading slide. The focus is on reading, while also encouraging participants to explore the library’s collection, and to attend classes and events. Many of the events are centered on science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM).
“The Summer Learning Adventure has been a part of La Porte County Public Library for decades,” said Director, Fonda Owens. “Over the years, it has expanded from solely enhancing the reading skills of students during the summer to fostering a love of life-long learning for all ages.”
And mark your calendars now for the End of Summer Bash on Friday, July 29 at 5:00pm in the La Porte High School Gymnasium. Kids of all ages will have a blast while learning the basics of solids, liquids and gasses and the chemical reactions that are used to create everyday substances such as paint, car bumpers and all kinds of polymers. This very exciting VIP event will WOW your kids with exciting chemical reactions while they get involved in experiments with color changes, a mysterious Genie, gooey Gak, springy Superballs and more! Electrifying displays of fire and liquid nitrogen thrill your audience while providing the opportunity to discuss and emphasize safety.
Along with Summer Learning Adventure 2016 the Library is teaming up with many community partners to have more of a presence at public, summer events going on in the area. Watch for our Monday Pack-A-Sacks, which begin June 6, to be held at the Civic Auditorium at 1001 Ridge Street, our weekly Stories and More & Play and Learn times to be held at the community building of the Carriage House Apartments on Andrew Avenue, and even look for us at places such as the Farmer’s Market and Downtown Movie Nights.
