Giving Back to the Community
During the holiday season, several MCHS clubs sponsored events to give back to the community. The National Honor Society sponsored Operation Bookworm. Students brought new and slightly-used books to the school office to be donated to the Salvation Army. High school students were not the only ones participating; members of National Honor Society took donation boxes to the Michigan City middle schools and elementary schools so all of Michigan City’s students could participate in the book drive for the Salvation Army.
MCHS Student Council also sponsored a food drive. Students brought in non-perishable food items to their first-hour class December 7 through December 11. Items were donated to the Salvation Army as well.
The Athletic Department organized a hat-scarf-and-gloves drive as well. Students donated hats, scarves, and gloves for families in need. Drop boxes were located in the main office as well as the athletic office. MCHS definitely made a difference in the community during the holiday season!
Barker and Krueger Honor Students Visit MCHS
On December 10, eighth graders from the honor classes at Barker Middle School and Krueger Middle School visited MCHS. The program was coordinated by the MCHS guidance department and administrative team to expose the students to the high school atmosphere and honors and advanced placement classes. The soon-to-be freshmen arrived at the high school and attended a program in the auditorium where they were greeted by counselors, administrators, and current MCHS students. The eighth graders were given information about academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities. Students were also given the opportunity to answer questions to win MCHS shirts.
After the opening, each eighth grader was paired with a current high school student and attended three classes and a lunch hour. This allowed the eighth graders to see what typical honors courses look like at MCHS. At the end of the day, the future freshmen returned to the auditorium for a question-and-answer session and were given copies of the Wolves Wire online newsletter and the school Cityzen newspaper.
The day gave future Wolves a look at what a day of classes at MCHS consists of, and counselors, teachers, and administrators were able to encourage the class of 2020 to keep striving for excellence.
New Year, New Semester
2016 brought the second semester, and students are now halfway done with the school year. For seniors, graduation day is coming closer and closer, with only five months remaining until the Class of 2016 walks the floor. But before graduation, there is still plenty to do. Grades are starting on a new slate, so everyone has a fresh start to do their best in their classes.
Student Council’s Winterfest is also planned for this semester, which brings Spirit Week and a pep session in the gymnasium for the students. Sports fans can look forward to the Johnson Road rivalry, City vs. La Porte basketball game scheduled for January 22 at La Porte High School. Everyone is encouraged to attend the game with great sportsmanship to cheer on the Wolves.
Winterball is approaching quickly as well. Winterball is a semi-formal dance sponsored by the MCHS Cityzen Newspaper and Alpha Yearbook. The dance will be held on January 30 at the Uptown Arts District. Tickets will be on sale during lunch hours once the date is closer. Winterball is also the last dance of the school year for freshmen and sophomores, as juniors and seniors have Prom to look forward in the spring. All proceeds from the dance go towards lowering the cost of yearbooks and allowing students and community members to receive the school newspaper at no cost.
Student Profile: Riley Shreve
Riley Shreve is a freshman at MCHS and is very involved at school. He participates in the class steering committee and plays soccer, football, basketball, and baseball. Along with all these activities, Riley loves to hang out with his family and friends. Riley also likes that his teachers, counselors, principals, and coaches at MCHS care about him as a student and an athlete.
His favorite part about La Porte County is the beach and all the sporting events. Riley is looking forward to spending the rest of high school at “the best school in Indiana!” After high school, he would like to play one of his many sports in college. Staff Profile: Senorita Gracyalny
Senorita G is the Spanish III and Spanish IV teacher at MCHS. She has been teaching for three years, all of which have been at MCHS. She is also the Spanish Club sponsor and the National Honor Society sponsor. Senorita G loves her students, and she says they are the reason she loves teaching.
“My students are my favorite part of MCHS because of their enthusiasm and passion for Spanish and life,” said Senorita G.
Her favorite part about La Porte County is the diverse food and all of the events that La Porte County offers. Along with teaching, Senorita G enjoys to read and travel. Senorita G, we are glad you are our January staff profile!
