#1StudentNWI: December Stories at Michigan City High School

Veterans Day Program
On November 11, students at MCHS honored Veterans Day with a program in the Wolves Den gymnasium put on by the MCHS JROTC, band, and chorus. Members of the community and veterans were invited to the program to honor those who risked their lives for our freedoms as Americans.

The program began with an introduction from Principal McCollum, and then the JROTC members held the flags while the chorus sang the National Anthem. Veterans in attendance were asked to stand so the student body and other community members could applaud them and thank them for their service to our country. District representative Scott Pelath addressed the audience, discussing the importance of honoring Veterans Day. He said that everything we have, from education to housing, is due to the braveness of our soldiers and our veterans, and we need to thank them for our freedoms.

At the conclusion of Representative Pelath’s speech, the MCHS band played the songs that correspond with the military branches, and veterans stood and were applauded when their song was being played. The program gave students and the community a way to thank our veterans and honor those who currently serve our country in a deep and meaningful way.

One City, One Sound
Michigan City Area Schools’ annual One City, One Sound concert took place on Thursday, December 3 at Michigan City High School. More than 1,100 choral and band members from the elementary schools, middle schools, and high school showcased their talents for the community.

The program opened and closed with city-wide performances of “Angels” and “The Little Drummer Boy.” Other songs included Christmas favorites such as “Frosty the Snowman” and “The Christmas Song.”

Non-perishable food items, toiletries, and monetary donations for the Salvation Army were also accepted and encouraged from the choral and band members and audience members.

For those unable to attend, the concert was broadcasted live on Channel 98, EducateMC.net, WEFM (95.9 FM), and WIMS (AM 1420).

When students return to school, winter sports will be in full swing. Gymnastics and boys basketball will be at the start of their seasons while girls basketball and swimming and diving will be towards the middle of their seasons. All members of the community are encouraged to come out and support City’s student-athletes in the Wolves Den this winter!

Staff Profile: Mr. Snyder
Mr. Snyder is a World History teacher at MCHS and has been teaching for five years. He has two daughters, Peyton and Aubrey, and loves to fish and hunt. His favorite part about MCHS is the student body because of the diversity and its involvement in activities throughout the city. Mr. Snyder coaches all three of City’s track teams: girls, boys, and unified track. He’s looking forward to lots of success for the teams this spring. #SpeedCity! Along with being a track coach and teacher, Mr. Snyder is Mucho Mas fan and can’t wait for them to come to Michigan City. Thanks for being our staff profile, Mr. Snyder!

Student Profile: The Plummer Sisters
Mckenzie and Riley Plummer are sisters on the MCHS diving team. Mckenzie is senior this year and Riley is a freshman, so this is the only year the two girls will be on the team together. As captain, Mckenzie says she helps her teammates get into the “right thinking” for their dives, and she also pushes Riley to be her best.

Riley and Mckenzie’s goal for the season is to advance to regionals. Advancing to regionals together is important to them because it’s the only year they can, with Mckenzie graduating in June. Both girls say that having each other on the team has brought them closer together as sisters and makes practices and meets more fun and exciting.

Outside of diving, Riley is involved in HOSA, Drama Club, Spanish Club, and Steering Committee. Her favorite part about MCHS is seeing all of her friends each day and having a variety of classes to choose from for her schedule. Riley really enjoys the La Porte County Fair and the beach. After high school, she wants to attend the University of Notre Dame and become an anesthesiologist.

Mckenzie is also involved in HOSA, Spanish Club, and Champions Together. She loves having Riley at school with her and knowing her little sister will be in a fun and safe school when Mckenzie leaves for college. Her favorite part about La Porte County is the friendly environment and the involvement of the community. She plans on attending Indiana University to become a neonatal nurse or a paramedic.

Mckenzie and Riley, thank you for being our student profile!

Coming Up...
As everyone gets into the holiday spirit, students at MCHS are preparing for the end of the first semester and midterm exams. This is the second year that the first semester has ended before Christmas break and students have taken midterms in December. Midterms will take place on Thursday, December 17 and Friday, December 18, with four tests on Thursday and three tests on Friday. Taking these tests before the long-awaited break will allow students to start on a clear slate with the new semester when they return to school in January.
