#1StudentNWI: Busy September for the Cougars at New Prairie High School

New Prairie High School’s September saw a lot of highlights, the largest being homecoming week, stretching from September 21-25. Homecoming week was filled with numerous themes including Western Wednesday and class day (where the class of ‘16 was finally allowed the opportunity to wear togas after four years!) Also amongst the activities were Class Olympics, which were dominated by the senior class. Class Olympics is a longstanding tradition where the classes come together for friendly competition in such activities as egg toss and tug of war.

Concluding homecoming week, on Friday New Prairie’s homecoming game, was against South Bend Riley;the game ended in a score of 7520 in favor of the Cougars. Along with the much-anticipated game, many students were eager to hear the announcement of Homecoming Court.

The votes were counted:

Freshman: Kali Dahms & Levi Britton

Sophomore: Emma Goldenstern & Garrett Gangloff

Junior: Nicol Maciata & Aidan Cotter

Senior: Jackie Widelski & Joe Cinal Lauren White & Nick Brassell, Evan King & Emily Rowe, Maddie Durbin & Paynter Rhed

New Prairie’s royalty turned out to be Lauren White and Joe Cinal. It was a great week, celebrated with much spirit and enthusiasm for NPHS.

Sports:

New Prairie High School athletics saw one of the biggest changes in its history this year: the transition, along with three other schools, to a new conference. NPHS, along with Bremen High School, John Glenn High School, and Jimtown High School, transitioned from the Northern State Conference (NSC) to the Northern Indiana Conference (NIC). New Prairie is joining the largest conference in the state, with a total of 13 teams fighting to be conference champions.

However, with a new conference comes new challenges. New Prairie had grown accustomed to dominating the NSC in such sports as volleyball and cross country; the NIC offers a new level of competition.

Senior volleyball player Ashley Campos is eager to continue the journey of her first season in the NIC with her teammates.

“I have noticed a great change in the playing level, but we love the challenge. It will better prepare us for postseason.”

The volleyball team, along with the other athletic squads, look forward to starting off in the new conference with a bang.

Arts:

New Prairie Theatre company proudly presents Grease! New Prairie has finished auditions for the iconic musical and cast lists have been posted.

Madison Michael, an active theatre participant and senior, has landed the role of Sandy.

“I am super excited to be doing such a popular show! Such a wellknown show is expected to draw large crowds.”

New Prairie’s past musical productions have included Footloose, Les Miserables, and Into the Woods. Grease! will be directed by Kortney Brennan and Taylor Truster. Shows dates are November 1214, 2015.

Teacher Shout Out:

For the month of September, New Prairie wishes to honor one of the newest members to Our House: Haley Hines. Ms. Hines is a Spanish teacher at NPHS and teaches Spanish II, III, and IV.

Along with teaching, she is the Freshman/JV volleyball coach and the leader of the Spanish Club. Hines graduated from La Porte High School and continued on to Indiana University South Bend to study Spanish Education. Miss Hines loves the staff at New Prairie and is excited to bring consistency and enthusiasm to the New Prairie’s language department.

Student Shout Out:

For September, New Prairie is recognizing Kara Blair. Kara is a sophomore and is representing New Prairie at the Girls’ Golf State Finals on October 2nd and 3rd. Kara has been golfing competitively since she was seven and found her love of the sport from her progolfer father. Kara’s future plans are to continue to lower her scores and she hopes to have committed to a college to play golf by her senior year. She is excited to be at State as a sophomore and hopes to make reappearances her junior and senior years. Good luck, Kara!

Upcoming News:

October will be a busy month for New Prairie. NPHS will be involved in a regionwide food drive where NP hopes to collect 15,000 pounds of food. Along with the food drive, many fall sports will be holding their senior nights; all of the teams are looking forward to having a lot of supporters for those nights.
