Dragon Boat Races
This year at La Porte High School, the wrestling team competed in the annual Dragon Boat Races at Stone Lake Beach. All the proceeds of the Dragon Boat races go toward the local Dunebrook organization.
In a Dragon Boat, 20 team members paddle in unison to be the first boat over the finish line. Dragon Boat racing requires teamwork and synchronization to compete in the top. Teams must follow the beat one of their team members creates and from there use their strength and power to come out on top.
This year, 20 teams competed. One of which was the LPHS Wrestling team. The wrestling team came out on top in the 2015 races.
Chromebooks at LP
New to the 2015-2016 school year at LPHS are Chromebooks. All history and tenth-grade English classes have Chromebooks instead of laptops.
Students sign into their Google accounts made by the school, and from there they are linked to Google Drive, Google Classroom, and Pearson, helping La Porte take one more step to a project based learning.
With the new technology, some teachers are trying to go completely paperless, and they have students turn in homework, notes, and projects in through their drive account. Many other teachers use the Chromebooks for online reading. The new technology is to help free up space in the computer labs, so other classes may use it instead of English classes typing papers in there.
Junior Abby Ford said, “I really like them so far. I find them very useful when it comes to taking notes and doing homework. I find it easier than paperwork because you can do so much more to organize your research and notes.”
FFA Takes Action
La Porte High School’s Future Farmers of America, FFA, club is taking action early this year. While many clubs wait until later in the school year to start their activities, FFA has already had several activities.
On August 21, they hosted a hog roast for the community. Only a ticket was required. FFA members went and picked corn they grew to cook at the gathering. The members of FFA cooked and served at the hog roast.
Then, on September 4, they hosted a cornhole tournament to LPHS Students. Many said they had a great time.

Homecoming
October 9th is quickly approaching for many LP seniors. As their final homecoming approaches, many are anxious to see is they will find themselves among the nominees.This year’s homecoming theme is Hunt the Pack.
Each year, the week of homecoming, Student Council hosts a spirit week. Days where students can dress up in their favorite Disney, throwback, sports, and Slicer wear are all featured in spirit week.
Along with a spirit week, Student Council will be hosting Class Olympics this year instead of the annual bonfire. The games will be held at Kiwanis Stadium where students may participate in competitions to see which class will come out on top. Performances by the dance and cheer teams will be present along with music by the marching band.
On Friday, there will be the annual Pep Session to prepare the football team for the big game against rival Michigan City. Performances will include the pom and dance team, cheer teams, marching band, and a parade of the homecoming nominees. The excitement of homecoming is all around.
Student Shout Out: Macy Llewellyn
Macy Llewellyn is a junior at La Porte High School. She is an honors student as well as captain of the soccer team.
Llewellyn works hard at everything she does. She never slacks off. Her hard work and dedication is seen in everything she does.
As a sophomore, Llewellyn was co- captain of the girls’ varsity soccer team, alongside Kaitlin Edquist. Now, as a junior, Llewellyn leads her team by example. She takes the lead in practices and in games. Llewellyn feels that the team always come first.
“I love playing soccer because there is always something to improve and work towards. You also for relationships with more people than you would ever imagine.”
In school, Llewellyn takes honors classes. She has taken numerous AP and Dual Credit classes along with being placed in advanced classes her freshman and sophomore years. Llewellyn enjoys the challenge of always learning something new and being able to grow as an individual. Just like in soccer, Llewellyn never quits or gives up, the challenge is there for her to defeat it, not for it to defeat her.
Teacher Shout Out: Ms. Schnitzer
Ms. Schnitzer is a Spanish teacher at LPHS. Many students love the atmosphere of her classroom. She provides a fun, relaxed learning environment that makes students want to learn Spanish. While the thought of working bell to bell is a turnoff to most students, once in her class students learn that the daily activities are hands-on learning that help them learn Spanish in a new way.
“I love my students. I enjoy getting to teach them about Spanish culture and the language itself, but I mostly like how they can change your perspective on subjects as well,” Schnitzer said about her job.
She is always there for her students. Schnitzer said that she realizes now that teaching is what she was always meant to do because she really enjoys connecting with the future of our world.
In her free time, Schnitzer loves to cook, bake, and dance.
“I absolutely love to dance. It is just so much fun and relaxing.”
