1968 Mustang Has a New Home!

car pictureFormer local resident Scot Squires was the winner of the cream-colored, 1968 Ford Mustang that was raffled off in November by the United Way of La Porte County. The Mustang was a raffle that helped raise over $8,000 for the local United Way.

Squires, who now lives in Logan, Utah, purchased his tickets online when he read a news article about the raffle.

“My son loves Mustangs and I’m always looking for ways to support nonprofit organizations, so I figured I would buy a couple of tickets,” said Squires, who once worked as the news editor at The News-Dispatch and a reporter for the La Porte County Herald-Argus.

“The raffle was a win-win for everyone. The United Way raised needed funds, we have a lovely car, and the students who restored the car did a great job and certainly learned a lot,” Squires said.

The car was purchased and donated to the United Way by Sullair and restored by students at the A.K. Smith Career Center. In all, students and staff spent about 1,300 hours restoring the vintage automobile. Local auto dealers and part stores donated parts needed for the restoration.

After winning the car, Squires paid to have it shipped to mountainous northern Utah.

“I can’t wait to drive the car through the beautiful canyons this summer,” he said. “This car has a lot of power and Utah is the perfect place to unleash it.”
