10 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Northwest Indiana: Street Art Festival, Concert Tradition, and Scarecrow Celebration


Each week we will be bringing you 10 fun things to do in Northwest Indiana over the weekend, so you are never without something to do! This weekend a street art fest, concerts, a fundraising walk, a gratitude day, a fall festival, craft fair, zombie walk, bazaar, and more are all on tap for a fun weekend in Northwest Indiana!

"Hooked on Art" Returning to Chesterton
What does a 3-D chalk artist from Florida, a glass blower from Arizona, and an acrylic artist from Chesterton have in common? They will all participate in Frontline Foundations’ second annual Hooked on Art Live Street Art Festival premiering in Downtown Chesterton on Saturday, September 28. From 9-5pm the streets will be filled with vibrant and original creations as artists from across the region and country demonstrate their unique talents at Thomas Centennial Park. Beyond one of a kind street art, the festival will include live music, an interactive Kid’s Corner, and one-of-a-kind shopping opportunities.

High School, University Concert Bands to Continue Tradition
The Valparaiso High School Concert Band and the concert bands at Valparaiso University have a long history of collaboration. That tradition will continue on Friday, September 27, when the Valparaiso University Luce Concert Band and the Valparaiso Community/University band play a combined concert with the bands at Valparaiso High School. The pieces to be played include Overture de Sonora by James Ployhar, El Capitan March by John Philip Sousa, In a French Garden by Richard Meyer, and Silver Ribbon Chanteys by James Curnhow. The conductors will be Miguel Rosario from VHS, and Jeffrey Doebler from VU.

The Homeward Bound Community Walk will be held on Saturday, September 28th, at Washington Park on the Lake in Michigan City. The walk is to raise awareness of homelessness in our communities. There are 8 agencies in Porter and La Porte Counties, all of which deal with the homeless, who put the walk on and benefit from the funds raised.

Culver's to Thank Local Farmers
Culver’s of Valparaiso and Schererville are extending a BIG Thank you to our local Farmers! All day long on Saturday, September 28, we will be hosting a fundraiser in honor of our local Future Farmers of America Chapters. Tractors will be at the restaurant from 11 am to 3 pm. Vote for your favorite (red or green), and be entered for a chance to win a dinner for four!

The Wanatah Scarecrow festival will be held on September 27th through September 29th. The Wanatah Scarecrow festival offers a family friendly atmosphere with kids rides, races, craft booths, food, a parade and free entertainment. It is sure to be a fun time for everyone.

Heather Horton One Night Jam
Chicago Street Theatre's One Night Jam concert series is proud to welcome Chicago-based singer/songwriter Heather Horton for her very first solo concert in Valparaiso, backed by her husband Michael McDermott, on Sunday, September 29th. Horton, who usually serves as McDermott's violinist and backing vocalist, has been writing her own songs for years. Her most recent CD, "Postcard Saturdays," garnered critical acclaim and is a fan favorite.

Popular Fall Craft Fair Will Include Bake Sale
Footlight Players is proud to sponsor their second Fall Craft Fair on Sunday, September 29th, from 1:00 to 3:30 PM. This popular event will include a bake sale in our lobby and the opportunity to pick up information on the group's upcoming productions.

Kouts Zombie Walk
The Anonymous Films Zombie Walk is a 2.4 mile walk through the streets of Kouts Indiana on September 28, 2013. We will start at Drazier Park and work our way through town finishing back at the park. A portion of the proceeds will go to help support our veterans and their families. There will be a Zombie Bash at the American Legion in Kouts following the walk.

The Salvation Army Porter County Corps Community Center invites the public, local businesses and families to have an opportunity to sell their wares (new or used) at The Salvation Army frontal property along Highway 6 in South Haven.

Fall Plow Days at Fischer's Farm
On Sunday, September 29, the La Porte County Draft Horse Association will host a Fall Plow Days at Fischer's Farm. Plowing will be from 10 am to 3 pm. Come and see fields being plowed by different breeds of draft horses using the horse drawn implements. Horse drawn hay rides to the pumpkin patch are also available.
