10 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Northwest Indiana: Popcorn Festival, Muddy Trail Run, and a One Night Jam


Each week we will be bringing you 10 fun things to do in Northwest Indiana over the weekend, so you are never without something to do! This weekend a festival, a regatta, a mud run, a shopping event, art openings, wrestling event, theater premiere, a concert, a historical event, and more are all on tap for a fun weekend in Northwest Indiana!

35 Years of Popcorn Celebrated This Weekend
Celebrating its 35th year, the Valparaiso Popcorn Festival continues to offer family-fun activities for all ages. Over 200 arts & crafts booths, 30 food booths, kids’ games, the five-mile Popcorn Panic, and the nation’s First Popcorn Parade are only the beginning of the excitement of this incredible festival. Check out all of the popping activities taking place that day!

The 6th annual Ride the Wave Regatta will be taking the waves on Saturday, September 7. The event, organized by the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association, offers a 19.3-mile marathon course and an 8-mile short distance course. The one-way race will award $850 worth of prize money to the top three finishers in this division.

Parkview Muddy Trail Run
To raise the funding necessary to ensure that JA and Boy Scouts programs remain available to young people in this community, the Parkview Muddy Trail Run will be held on Saturday, September 7. Designed as a muddy obstacle-filled 5K run, this will not be a speed or hard-core challenge event.

Wine. Dine. Shop. on September 7th
It's that time of the year again for the long anticipated Wine.Dine.Shop which will be held Saturday, September 7th. The event, which runs from Noon until 4:00p.m., is essentially just like it sounds: an afternoon to enjoy some great wine, delicious food and some shopping.

Uptown Art District First Friday Art Walk Continues September 6th
The Michigan City Mainstreet Association presents the First Friday Art Walk in the Uptown Arts District on Friday, September 6, 2013 from 5pm to 8pm. The Art Walk features several businesses hosting an array of artists and entertainment for free enjoyment for visitors.

Portage Scouts to Bring Pro Wrestling Event to Portage
Ever wonder how Hulk Hogan or The Ultimate Warrior got their start? They started in Independent wrestling shows like Adrenalized Ringside Wrestling. Come join Portage Scouts as we present Saturday Night Wrestling as ARWPRO comes to Portage Woodland Park.

The Towle Theater to Present Indiana Premiere
The final show of the Towle Theater’s 2013 10th Anniversary is the dark comedy Pursued by Happiness by Chicago Playwright, Keith Huff. Pursued by Happiness tells the story of an unexpected meeting between two 40-something biochemists played by Towle newcomers Danny Heeter (Chicago) and Helen Young (Chicago).

"two red chairs" Opens at Southern Shore Art Association Gallery
“two red chairs” is the intersection of the varied work of two artists. Richard Pociask, is an award winning artist who develops his vision through the use of various mediums and techniques, including graphite, charcoal and oil pastels. The other, M.T. Carey, is a photographer, who uses black & white images to express her vision.

Gretchen Peters One Night Jam
Legendary Nashville songwriter Gretchen Peters makes her second appearance on the Chicago Street Theatre's stage on Sunday, September 8th. Peters, who has written hit songs for Trisha Yearwood, Bryan Adams, Pam Tillis, Neil Diamond, George Strait, Etta James, The Neville Brothers and, most famously, "Independence Day" for Martina McBride, is a very accomplished singer/songwriter in her own right.

Prehistoric Porter County will open September 7th to visitors once again, inviting them to make a discovery of mammoth proportions. The historic jail cells house the redesigned exhibit, featuring the story of how one man’s farm became a dig site for the Chicago Natural History (Field) Museum. During Popcorn Festival, the Museum invites kids aged 8-11 to assist in another “fossil” dig on the museum lawn. PoCo Muse paleontologist Zach Gipson will be leading digs beginning at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. Parents and Popcorn Festival goers of all ages are invited to share their stories of festivals past at the oral history booth across the lawn.
