10 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Northwest Indiana: Gobble Rock, A Christmas Story Comes Home, and Bret Michaels Rocks Blue Chip


Each week we will be bringing you 10 fun things to do in Northwest Indiana over the weekend, so you are never without something to do! This weekend a benefit concert, a local food event, exhibit opening, rock concert, a dancing competition, a salute concert, leaf raking day, craft show, pancake breakfast, holiday festival, and more are all on tap for a fun weekend in Northwest Indiana!

500 Turkeys is pulling out all the stops yet again with Gobble Rock! This is a benefit concert that will take place at the Memorial Opera House on November 9. The bands playing that night will be: The Energy Commission, Chris and Lou featuring Chad Clifford, the Positive Vibe Technicians, The Sarah Archer Trio, and the SunSets. A cash bar will be open and the Hungry Truck will be parked at the opera house from 5:30-9:30pm.

County Line Orchard is going back to our roots and celebrating our region's farmers, chefs, and artisans! Come out Saturday, November 9th, for the 2013 Farm to Table Festival at 5 pm. The event features an appetizer bar, specialty beers, chef and restaurant tastings, and a dessert bar. Meet the hardworking farmers that nourish our community and the many dedicated volunteers breaking ground at community gardens and urban farm projects all over the region.

This holiday season, the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond will feature six animated display scenes from “A Christmas Story.” The displaysinclude Higbee’s Department Store Window, Flick’s Tongue and the Triple Dog Dare, It’s a Major Award, Santa’s Mountain at Higbee’s and The Bumpus Hounds. In honor of the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority’s 30th anniversary, as well as the 30th anniversary of the movie, a new window scene will be unveiled at the start of the exhibit.

Legendary rocker Bret Michaels brings his rock hits and hot ballads to Blue Chip on Saturday, November 9 at 8 pm in his Life Rocks Tour live from the Stardust Event Center. As front man for the gritty and glam 80s rock band Poison, Bret Michaels has sold 30 million albums worldwide, with 10 singles hitting the Billboard Hot 100.

Dancing Like The Stars Returns to Duneland
The Duneland Family YMCA will once again host Dancing Like The Stars on Saturday, November 9th at Duneland Falls Banquet Center. These local celebrities have been paired with professional dance partners from the Fred Astaire Valparaiso Ballroom. The contestants are being outfitted in extravagant costumes, and they'll be dancing to win your votes!

VHS A Band, Concert Choir to Host Salute to Veterans
The Valparaiso High School "A" with special guests the VHS Concert Choir invites the general public to its annual Salute to Veterans! concert. This concert will take place on Saturday, November 9, 2013. The program will feature works by John Philip Sousa, Clare Grundman, John Williams, and more.

Annual Leaf Raking Day
The Annual Leaf Raking Day for the senior citizens of Portage will take place on Saturday, November 9th. Registration will take place at 8:30 am at Myers Elementary School, in the cafeteria. Buses will leave Myers at 9:00 am and return around noon. Please bring your friends and family! Please also bring your own rake if possible.

Craft Show at MCHS
The Michigan City High School Parent Network will hold its annual Holiday Art and Craft show on Saturday, November 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the High School Cafeteria. Admission is free, and a variety of items will be available, including lunch and a bake sale.

Humane Society Pancake Breakfast
The Humane Society Calumet Area is hosting their annual AYCE Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, November 9h from 8am-1pm at the Bethel Church. We will also be selling various HSCA merchandise, such as t-shirts, car magnets, tumblers, and more. All proceeds of the breakfast will benefit the HSCA animals.

Festival of Trees, Choc-O-Lots
The Porter County Chapter of the American Red Cross and Valparaiso Kiwanis Sunrise Club are hosting "Festival of Trees" and "Choc-O-Lots" again this year. The delicious and memorable chocolate tasting will begin at 4:00 pm. The auction of beautifully decorated trees and wreaths will begin at 5:30 pm and will continue throughout the evening with items of gifts and holiday table and wall decor.
