10 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Northwest Indiana: Concert in the Park, Party in the Park, and Benefit Bike Ride

Final Summer Rhapsody Concert
The Summer Rhapsody Festival Orchestra is returning for a final performance this summer. This orchestra, comprised of 60 area professional and student musicians and led by Miguel E. Rosario-Vega will bring A Salute to Film Music on Saturday, August 18.

In order to shed light on a growing global tragedy, The Kibble Kitchen Pet Pantry, LakeShore Paws, and CPR Fund Rescue and Adoption are hosting an awareness day for homeless animals. Join us August 18 at Countryside Park in Portage, Indiana for International Homeless Animals’ Day.

Craft Beer Tasting at Wise Guys
Wise Guys wants all you craft beer fans to mark your calendars for Saturday, August 18. Be at our Merrillville store (93rd and taft) at 9 am, where Wise Guys will again host a Limited Batch Craft Beer Lottery. Start your weekend off right by putting your name in for rare and highly desirable limited editions of great crafts including, but not limited to, Founder’s, Two Brothers and Stone Breweries.

Opera At The Acorn
Members from the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra will join vocalists in a presentation of I Pagliacci. This opera provides drama, action, emotional music and more. The audience will find it to be a short (2 acts), Italian opera. There will be English translation with super-titles, soloists who evoke enormous emotion, a star-studded chorus, memorable orchestral feats and the enjoyment of an intimate theater setting.

On Saturday, August 18, the Dunes National Parks Association is sponsoring the 7th annual Duneland celebration, “Party in the Park,” at Thomas Centennial Park in downtown Chesterton. “Party in the Park” will feature a community pot-luck from local restaurants, live entertainment, dancing, children activities, and a beer garden. Admission to the event is $5 for adults or free for children 7 years old and under.

The Purdue University North Central American Sign Language Club will host an ASL Coffeehouse on Friday, Aug. 17. The event is open to ASL students as well as community members and children are welcome to attend with a parent or adult. This is a pleasant, casual event for all to enjoy through participation or as an observer.

August Jewelry Making Classes at the Portage Library
Mara Wible, formerly of MegaBeads will lead jewelry making classes Fridays in August. The August 17 class is the Wavy Chain Maille Bracelet. This Bracelet is a wonderful introduction to the Japanese Family of chain maille weaves. It is a beautiful modification of a Japanese 2-in-1 weave. There will be many colors of beads to choose from.

Valparaiso Firefighters to Again Host Annual Ride
The Valparaiso Firefighters Local #1124 is hosting our 3rd Annual Benefit Run on August 18. Riders will leave from and return to the Valparaiso Harley-Davidson. Come on out and enjoy some camaraderie, food and beverages, raffles and prizes, entertainment, and a beer garden.

Free to Breathe NWI is hosting a benefit to raise money for Free to Breathe - National Lung Cancer Partnership. A Family Fun Nite at Zao Island will be held on August 18, from 11 am to 4 pm. Wristbands are only $15 per person and include pizza and pop, 20 tokens, unlimited mini golf, and one attraction of your choice (go-karts, unlimited slide, or laser tag).

Lakefront Art Festival
The Lakefront Art Festival features the very best of art and fine craft in Michigan City's beautiful Washington Park! The festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, August 18 and 19. Proceeds benefit LCA exhibitions, programs, and educational outreach across the region.
