A last second three-point attempt to win the game for Portage rolled off the rim as visiting Munster hung on for the victory on Saturday. Jordan Collazo led the Indians with 19 points. Canaan Cooper (17) and Tim Bryant (13) also reached double figures. Portage led 33-31 at the half.
Portage 75, Highland 61 (Boys Basketball)
Tim Bryant and Shamari Lewis each had 17 points to lead host Portage in its season opener on Friday. Canaan Cooper (15), Jordan Collazo (14), Tyler McCann (7), Tyler Meux (3) and Quinten Utterback (2) also scored for the Indians. Nathan Cherry, Marquis White, Brian Mihal and Zach Rudd contributed solid defensive efforts.
East Chicago Central 88, Marquette Catholic 77 (Boys Basketball)
Ryan Fazekas had 26 points to lead visiting Marquette on Saturday, but the Cardinals made the plays in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Kyren Miller added 17 and Jovante Peals had 13 for the Blazers.
La Porte 66, Crown Point 44 (Girls Basketball)
Kyleigh Kubik had a game-high 21 points and Nicole Konieczny added 16 for the host Slicers, who prevailed in Duneland Athletic Conference play.
Megan Morgan led Crown Point with 15 points.
Merrillville 53, Valparaiso 42 (Girls Basketball)
Host Merrillville prevailed in the Duneland Athletic Conference opener despite 20 points from Valparaiso’s Grace Withrow.
Valparaiso 63, South Bend Clay 20 (Girls Basketball)
The Vikings won behind Grace Withrow, who had 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting and three connects from beyond the arc.
Tippecanoe Valley 56, Portage 37 (Girls Basketball)
Visiting Portage dropped the first game of the Tippecanoe Valley Thanksgiving tournament.
