The 3rd Annual Memorial Gardens Tour will be presented on the grounds of the La Porte County Historical Society Museum, Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. The museum is located at 2405 Indiana Avenue (US#35) at the south entrance to La Porte. Six “residents” of La Porte County cemeteries will be represented. There will be first person presentations giving interesting facts about the life and activities of each at a specific time in their life. Three are male and three are female—each representing an individual who owned and operated a business in the county. Replicas of each one’s grave marker will be on the site where the “resident” will present information to attendees.
Tour information has been researched and compiled by Fern Eddy Schultz, La Porte County Historian, who will be the tour guide, introducing each ”resident” and providing additional historical and biographical information. Those being portrayed are Edith J. Backus (public stenographer), Gerhardt F. Decker (La Porte hardware store owner), Mary B. Hartwell (book and stationery store owner), Frank B. Heusi (grocer turned furniture store owner), Adelheid Schumm (milliner) and George John Staiger II (Michigan City hardware store owner).
Perhaps you have heard these names and this is an opportunity to become acquainted with them through the portrayals. A handout will be provided to include information about the depicted “residents.” All have played an important part in the history of La Porte County.
Regular museum admission fees will be charged which includes admission that day to the museum following the tour. In the event of rain, the tour will be conducted in the meeting room in the museum. Museum hours are from Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The facility is handicapped accessible.
