The Purdue University North Central graduation was held this evening at the Valparaiso University's Athletics-Recreation Center (ARC). The class of 2014 conferred 503 bachelor's degrees and 56 associate degrees and 29 master's degrees, including 28 Master's of Business Administration degrees.
Alan Mysckowski of Crown Point received his degree in Liberal Studies, with a concentration in English.
"I am looking to go into campus administration in the future. For now I have an internship with the Times and Channel 56 working on scripts and office work," he said and when asked why he chose PNC, he shared his unique story, "I came to PNC as a pitching coach for baseball, and I was able to take courses. One of the best courses I took was an English class. From that point I started phasing away from baseball and working towards education."
The traditional commencement ceremony featured the conferring of degrees by Purdue North Central Chancellor Dr. James B. Dworkin. Purdue University President Mitchell E. Daniels Jr.,was also in attendance.
During Dr. Dworkin's address, he challenged the graduates with three things: to, "First, to find a career that you enjoy, have no regrets, have a fulfilling life, and never be bored. Second, be sure that you give back to others. Remember to help someone who needs it. Third, encourage others to pursue wisdom in higher education. The future will belong to those that are educated and or have 21st century jobs."
The new graduates were welcomed to the ranks of Purdue alumni by Nathan Cobbs, trust officer for Harbour Trust & Investment Management Company and member of the Purdue North Central Alumni Association Advisory Board. The response on behalf of the 2013-2014 graduating class were presented by Lindsey Sample, who is earning her Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
The symbolic turning of the tassels concluded the commencement exercises, and the newest alumni to Purdue University North Central stood and rejoined their family and friends. Following the ceremony, graduates and their guests were invited to enjoy a reception in the Harre Student Union on the Valparaiso University campus.
