Many runners woke up to a snowy morning today in Valparaiso, but it did not dampen their spirits as they headed out to Valparaiso High School for the VROOM 5K, an annual fundraiser for the Valparaiso High School Cross Country team.
“We have one of the largest cross country teams in the state, it costs quite a bit to transport the boys around the state to meets, pre-season camp, and to train off season. The money raised today will help offset some of the costs.” Race Director Steve Dalton said. This is Dalton’s third year being involved with the race. “We are anticipating around 200 runners this year, which is down a little from last year because of the weather.”
Although most of the registered runners were from Valparaiso, people came from all over Northwest Indiana. Running has been growing in Northwest Indiana, so people now come from all over to run in local events. “We have a good running community, and it continues to grow,” said Dalton.
Despite the snowy weather, the spirits were high and runners were prepared. Some runners came in themed outfits, but most were bundled up to run in the snow.
Runners had to be very careful at the start and finish of the race due to traffic and parking in the lot because an Indiana State School Music Association competition was also being held at Valparaiso High School.
The overall winner was Andrew Jankowski (16:55), and the top female was Kayla McCurdy (21:01). All results can be found at www.thtiming.com.
