2014 is here! And that means an entirely new year that is filled with great things to do at the La Porte County Public Library!

Chill Out and READ! Winter Reading Program (Y)
February 1 – March 1
All La Porte County Public Library locations
Kindergarten through 5th grade students complete a variety of activities, games, reading, and attend programs all month long to earn rewards. Stop in at your nearest library location to get started. 30 participants will win entry into the grand prize event; a LEGO Bridge Building Workshop and a ticket to LEGOLAND in Schaumburg, IL! Preschool age children complete activities and attend programs with their parents to receive a prize.

Local Lore: Belle Gunness (A)

Bruce Johnson, local expert on Belle Gunness from La Porte who has been called the first female serial murderer in the nation, will give major facts and mysteries concerning Belle Gunness. Everyone will be able to ask questions and comment. This is the 2nd Local Lore event held on the 2nd Tue. of the month from 6:30-7:30pm in the Indiana Room.

Watch Legos Mindstorms robots perform and find out how they are programmed. Becca Ruskowsky, FIRST Legos League mentor from the Michigan City Area Schools Safe Harbor program, will do a lively show-and-tell.
Indiana's Underground Railroad (Y)

This workshop, presented by the Indiana State Museum, features the importance of the Underground Railroad in Indiana and the nation before, during and after the Civil War. Characters from the time period lead participants through the various levels of the presentation, which highlights hands-on activities as part of the experience. Intended for students in grades 3 and up as well as adults interested in state history.

Brendan Hubbs, who lived in Tokyo for a year, will talk about Japan's varied islands, unique holidays and festivals, and Japanese arts, folklore and food.

Blindfold Building with Legos. Find out how well you build without using your sense of sight. Then have fun seeing what everyone else creates wearing their blindfolds.
The Vacant Chair: Civil War Widowhood
February 22 at Union Mills

The Civil War cost over 600,000 American lives, and spurred an entire culture of mourning. Learn how fashions, marketing, embalming, and day-to-day life were impacted. Our presenter will wear and describe a period-accurate 1861 full-mourning outfit.
