Notes from Rotary Meeting of June 03, 2013
President Deb Varnak called the meeting to order and led members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four-Way Test of Rotary. Mike Sutton offered the invocation.
Songleader Leigh Morris led in singing the “Get Together” song.
Happy Birthdays – Deb Varnak, Ron Gigliotti, Mike Sutton, Tyler Smith, Vern Sikora, Glade Montgomery, Christina Dougherty (The club serenaded Christina in celebration of her 75th birthday on June 2!)
Sergeant-at-Arms – Mitch Feikes (assisted by Beth Irwin with the basket) raised money for the club with trivia questions about the Maple City Grand Prix Formula One Power Boat races held on Stone Lake over the weekend.
Rotary International Foundation – Foundation Chair Leigh Morris recognized Deb Varnak as the club’s 20th member to earn a Paul Harris Fellowship. Leigh reminded the club of the benefits made possible world wide with contributions to the Rotary Foundation.
Rotary Club of La Porte’s Annual Family Picnic – June 17 – 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
This year’s picnic will feature the induction of La Porte Rotary officers and directors, induction of our past president Christina Dougherty as District Governor for 2013-2014, and of District Officers. Awards will also be presented to the club’s scholarship recipients for 2013.
The Annual Picnic will be held at the picnic shelter at Legacy Hills Golf Club with catering by Spire Farm-to-Fork Restaurant. Cost is $15.00 per adult and $10.00 per child. Please send your reservations and payment to Treasurer Mike Arnett by Friday, June 7.
Program – Antwan Wordlaw, the club’s representative to RYLA
Deb Varnak introduced Antwan who spoke about his experiences at the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy at Camp Tecumseh earlier this year. As one of 200 students attending the weekend camp, Antwan enjoyed meeting new people and being involved in team building and leadership building experiences. Antwan will be a senior at La Porte High School this fall and is a member of the wrestling and football teams. He is also one of three students to be chosen to work at the La Porte Savings Bank’s Slicer Branch at the high school, where he focuses on customer service and satisfaction. He appreciates this work experience as good preparation to pursue a degree in business and management.
