It’s Grandparents’ Day at La Porte High School

On May 3, 2013, La Porte High School hosted their annual Grandparents’ Day from 8-10. This day honors the relationship between students and their grandparents, and gives the elders a chance to visits and tour the school.

The cafeteria was packed with happy pairs, and the program was kicked off with a performance from the high school’s Show Choir. The choir, dressed in glitzy gold dresses and suits, performed a montage of songs, both classic and new. Two crowd favorites were Jason Mraz’s “I Won’t Give Up” and fun.’s “Some Nights.”

Performer blank LeeAnna Ciatsko said, “I had a great time! I love performing in show choir, and I love spending time with my babci.”

Following the upbeat performance, the groups were dismissed to partake in refreshments and mingle. All food and drink were provided from volunteers from the Parent Teacher Student Association. The PTSA is responsible for organizing the event and monitoring the refreshments as well. The guests were treated a variety of tiny delicacies such as mini strawberry cupcakes, warm meatballs, and cucumber sandwiches.

Student Rachel Null said, “The entertainment was phenomenal and the food was delicious, especially the meatballs. I had great time with my grandparents.”

After prizes were raffled off, Ingrid Voelker, president of the PTSA, presented Principal Greg Handel a Lifetime Achievement Award for the National Parent Teacher Conference Association. This award honors a select group of educators dedicated to enriching the lives on children. This award justly commemorates Handel’s service to the La Porte Community as he is retiring after this year.

The remainder of the time was dedicated to students and their grandparents enjoying each other’s company. They sipped lemonade and coffee while chatting, or took a stroll around the high school. This annual event is a student favorite and will continue for many years to come.
