A La Porte County Life in the Spotlight: Jay Seaburg

Jay Seaburg is considered an elevator enthusiast, profound traveler, road fanatic, brand ambassador, and self proclaimed ‘Me-Nerd,’ or an avid fan of the hardware store Menards. Since Seaburg was little his love of elevators has been profound. This love occurred due to online research, a huge fascination with how they are designed, and family travels.

“Not a lot of people think elevators are important, but for me they are. It’s independence for me. Elevators help me get to doctors, stores, etc,” Seaburg said.

At birth, Seaburg was born with cerebral palsy and severe hearing loss, yet this situation has not deterred him from graduating from high school or living his life to the fullest. Since Seaburg has some disabilities, he wants people to know that it’s okay to ask questions and converse with him.

“I’m not shy or nervous about answering peoples questions about my disability. Don’t be afraid to ask if I need help or ask a question,” said Seaburg.

Seaburg has traveled many places during his lifetime and finds his favorite destination to be Iceland. This country is considered his favorite because of its nature. Seaburg hits profound traveler status since he has visited 48 out of the 50 United States States as well as locations outside the US.

Seaburg ties his love of traveling and elevators into one by posting on his Instagram account,  @nwindianaelevators. Seaburg has posted quite a few pictures on Instagram of elevators, and always takes a picture of the elevator buttons. The buttons always make it onto his Instagram post because Seaburg enjoys seeing the differences between each elevator he comes across.

“Every elevator manufacturer comes out with different buttons and systems. It's always interesting to see how they’re different,” Seaburg said.

Since his first travel experience, Seaburg has classified himself as a ‘road geek,' coming from his deep love of travel and the views that come with it. Maps, construction, and design systems are Seaburg’s favorite parts of the road.

Seaburg also goes by another title, ‘Me-Nerd’. This title was given to Seaburg after his continual visits to the Menards stores. Seaburg hopes to go into every single Menards store in the U.S. and see if they have an elevator or not. To him, Menards is a great place full of kind and helpful workers. Seaburg also loves hearing the Menards jingle.

Seaburg’s favorite Menards location is in Madison, Wisconsin. He enjoys the Madison location due to the fact that it has not been renovated, it still has that 90s construction and appeal. Seaburg also enjoys this location because it has two full floors, there is an elevator right by the entrance, and the elevator is completely made of glass.

“I like going to this store because it's original. It’s not rebranded like all the other stores. My favorite part about Menards is the people that work there. They are very nice and I even know some people that work there. I always appreciate the workers,” said Seaburg.

Aside from being a social media influencer and avid traveler, Seaburg spends the rest of his time with family and working at Qubit Network.
