Public invited to check out jobs available in Transportation and Food Service
For anyone who ever wondered what it's like to drive a school bus or work in a school cafeteria - now is your chance to find out!
Michigan City Area Schools is holding a “test drive” open house and the public is invited to test drive a school bus and visit a test kitchen to see if a career in Transportation or Food Service is a fit for them.
The open house will take place Saturday, November 6 from 10 am to 1 pm at the MCAS Service Building, 1100 S. Woodland Ave. During this time, guests are welcome to drive a school bus through the parking lot - but anyone driving must bring a valid driver’s license and wear closed-toe shoes.
Sue Harrison, Director of Transportation for MCAS, said the purpose of offering a test drive is to show how fun and easy it is to drive a school bus.
“It may seem intimidating to some people who aren’t used to driving a large vehicle, but we offer a great training program to our staff, so there is no experience necessary,” she said. “Our drivers enjoy their jobs for so many reasons, but the most common thing we hear from them is how much they like working with our students. It is definitely a fulfilling experience.”
Tours of a test kitchen will also be available on Saturday for anyone interested in a career with the Food Service department.
“The time has never been better to join our team,” said Nicole Santana, Assistant Food Service Director for MCAS. “Feeding students is what we do, and there is no greater satisfaction than knowing you play such an important role in their school day.”
Both positions offer a family-friendly work schedule that includes nights and weekends off. The minimum starting hourly wage for contracted staff in food service is $13.05, with an added monthly perfect attendance bonus; and starting pay for bus drivers is $20.05 per hour.
Those interested in these positions are invited to attend the Test Drive Open House on Saturday, or contact the MCAS Transportation Department at (219) 873-2127 or the MCAS Food Service Department at (219) 873-2131 with any questions.
