Purdue Federal Credit Union Employee Spotlight: Melissa Vega

Purdue Federal Credit Union operates on a members first, community focused plan. Their key to keeping their membership across the La Porte region is finding and cultivating employees like Melissa Vega, Sales Manager for Purdue Federal Credit Union’s operations in La Porte and Westville.

Vega is Purdue born and bred, having graduated from Purdue North Central (now Purdue Northwest) with a bachelor of science in Business Management. She found her calling early, starting as a part-time teller for Members United Federal Credit Union in 2007.

“Through the past 11 years, I’ve served our membership through Members United and Purdue Federal Credit Union as a result of our 2010 merger,” Vega said. “I truly believe I have found my calling in the financial services industry.”

Part of what she loves about her work are the differences between a traditional bank and a credit union. With Purdue Federal, she gets to put her members' interests first.

“Service to others is one of my deepest core values. I instill the belief in our Monroe St. Branch team to do everything we can to help our members become financially successful,” she said. “We try our best to get to know each of our members on a personal level in order to provide an elevated level of service.”

Her member-focused attitude led to her climbing the ladder in the organization, and her new role as a Sales Manager lets her work with team members closely and spread her values.

“My responsibility is to ensure our team provides the best service possible to our membership,” she said. “It’s my job to support them and provide the knowledge and training needed to ensure our branches operate effectively.”

Her time with Purdue Federal grew to be more than simply work, it helped shape her as a person.

“I’m extremely grateful to work for such a wonderful organization,” Vega said. “Throughout the years, Purdue Federal gave me ample opportunities to grow into leadership roles and utilize my skills to the best of my abilities. They also deeply supported my dedication to volunteerism and community involvement.”

Finance is Vega’s passion, not just her job. In her spare time she dedicates herself to improving financial literacy around the Region.

“I’m a certified presenter in financial literacy for the Northern Indiana Bank On Alliance,” she said. “I also serve as an ambassador for Greater La Porte Chamber of Commerce and frequently provide financial literacy presentations to Boston Middle School and have participated in PALS [Purdue Athletes Life Success] for many years in West Lafayette.”
