The study of how fluids move through micro-channels, called microfluidics, is critical in the fields of biomedicine and bioanalysis. Engineers are looking for new ways to best handle bio-particles, such as cells and microorganisms, in a microfluidic environment.
Jie Xu, Ph.D., the first speaker in the 2018-19 Purdue University Northwest School of Engineering Distinguished Speaker Series, will discuss how sound waves are being developed into powerful tools to move lab-on-a-chip technology to the next level.
Xu’s talk, “Microfluidic Manipulation Using Sound Waves: A Sound Idea?,” will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, at the Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS) on the Purdue Northwest Hammond Campus (6937 Woodmar Ave., Powers Building, Rm. 115). The event is free and open to the public.
Xu is an assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He received his bachelor’s degree, with distinction in thermal engineering from Tsinghua University in 2005. He went on to receive his master's and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from Columbia University in 2006 and 2010, respectively.
Xu is a recipient of a 2017 NASA Early Career Faculty Award, the 2012 Tony B. Award from the Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening, a 2011 DARPA Young Faculty Award, and a 2009 Chinese Government Award. Based on his outstanding track record as a successful scientist, he was elected a member of the Global Young Academy (GYA) in 2013.
