Michiana Humane Society: Big Spay-Neuter News

Michiana-Humane-Society-Big-Spay-Neuter-News-2016Monday, September 26, marked a milestone for the Michiana Humane Society! For the first time we had a veterinarian at MHS doing surgery on our shelter pets specifically for the Spay-Neuter Initiative!

Veterinarian Dr. Tim Sullivan recently sold the suburban Chicago practice he built over 35 years. He wanted to continue the kind of volunteer work he has done his entire career -- helping shelters keep their animals healthy, and reducing the overpopulation of unwanted pets in the community. So Tim connected with the MHS family and offered his surgical services!

On Monday he did 12 spay-neuter surgeries on cats, assisted by our vet tech Kaycee Chambers. Now every cat in the adoption room is "fixed" and ready to go home! Next week he and Kaycee will work on dogs, and Tim plans to be at the shelter at least twice a month, depending on our need.

We will still transport some pets for their spay-neuters, but having the option for surgery right at the shelter is a great step forward!
