Michigan City Police Department Announces May 2016 OPO Traffic Enforcement & Patrols

michigan-city-policeThe Michigan City Police Department will have extra Officers working overtime during the month of May working OPO Blitz 85 “Click it or Ticket it” that began Friday, March 6th and will end on Memorial Day Monday, May 30th.

Michigan City will have an increase in traffic as visitors come to Michigan City for the many attractions in the Michigan City.

Officers will be working with a primary focus of enforcing Seat belt, Child Restraint laws, Speeding, Following Too Closely and Texting, along with enforcing all other traffic laws throughout Michigan City.

Officers from the Michigan City Police Department will be making a special effort this year to ensure all motorists are safe around the Holiday celebrations and encourage designated drivers.

The Michigan City Police Department has completed our participation in the OPO traffic enforcement grant for the month of April 2016. We had 13 extra patrols working 41.5hrs of over time, paid from a Grant issued by the Indiana Governors Council. Officers stopped 116 vehicles for traffic violations.

Officers wrote 83 Citations; 1 arrest for Habitual Traffic Violator and 1 arrest (non-custody) for a Suspended-Prior Driver, 53 for Seat Belt violation, 5 Child Restraint violations, 6 Suspended drivers, 5 other license violations (2 No License in possession when required, 2 No Valid License when required, 1 expired Driver License), 10 speeding violation and 2 other traffic violations (1 expired license plate and 1 no registration).

Officers also wrote 66 warning tickets; 16 Speeding, 1 Other License violations (1 No License when required), 34 for automatic signal or stop sign violations, 1 Left of Center, 3 Improper Turns, 5 other traffic violations (1 No Registrations, 1 Railroad Crossing violation, 1 Improper Turn at intersection, 1 School Buss Violation and 1 False Plates) and 6 equipment violations.

Officers of the Michigan City Police Department will continue working other traffic safety grants, including the Countywide DUI Task Force to improve the Quality of Life to the citizens of Michigan City.
