Teacher Spotlight:
Barnes, Barbara, Cort, Pete; all nicknames of South Central’s favorite educator, Mrs. Barnes. This beloved woman is one of South Central’s English teachers as well as the Theater director. Mrs. Barnes not only helps the minds of teens grow, she also is a source of support for them. She avidly checks in with students who are willing to open up to her and give them advice on behalf of a teacher, adult, friend, and parent.
Barnes is also a very talented actress and singer. She passes on experiences and tricks she has learned throughout the years to each and every aspiring actor at South Central. She has also increased the size of the school’s drama department as well as audience size. Barnes makes sure that everyone knows drama isn’t the stereotypical “nerd activity” and that there is a place for everyone in theater. It’s more about acceptance and family than singing and dancing well.
One of Barnes’s drama students, Emily Ames, said, “I like how Mrs. Barnes teaches us so much more than just theater. She teaches us how to get out of our comfort zones in an environment that's safe. I love that she teaches us to be better people and helps us to befriend people we've never even talked to. And she does all of this while being an authority figure, but also being our friend at the same time. I'd trust her with my life, and I can honestly say that she is the best teacher I have ever had!”
Long term student, Zoe Auskalnis, claims that Mrs. Barnes is “da bomb”. It’s safe to say Barnes is a wonderful role model for each and every student she’s ever encountered!
Student Spotlight:
This South Central Senior is definitely proving himself on the court this year. With 13 years of basketball under his belt, he promises to put his all into the end of his high school career. With great assists, impressive rebounds, and admirable sportsmanship, Cooper Husmann is the perfect addition to the Varsity basketball team at South Central.
Cooper is a fun loving student who you will find hunting, fishing, or spending time with his friends. Cooper can also be found balling it up at the Hanna park with his BFFs Max or taking long walks on the beach with Carson as they fly kites into the sunset. Cooper has a goal to get a scholarship to play basketball at a college level. Other than that, Cooper has yet to decide on what he will do after graduating in June. If you would like to see Cooper and the rest of the Varsity boys in action, come to South Central January 9th as they take on LaPorte!
Boys Basketball:
While many of us are sitting back and relaxing this holiday season, the South Central boy’s basketball team sure isn’t! With twenty-two more games this season, resting is just not an option! The JV and Varsity teams are hard at work to win more games and claim the PCC title as well as the keg- a traveling trophy passed on through conference teams.
The preparation is also leading up to three rival games. Coming up on January 9th, South Central will take on La Porte High School on the home court. Then on January 28, they will take on LaCrosse at home. With a heated rivalry between players and fans, it promises to be an event to attend. Be sure to arrive early to secure a seat to this intense event! Lastly, the last home game will be against Westville on February 26. With the promise of an intense student section from both sides, I recommend attending the game! Hopefully, we’ll see you then! Let’s go Satellites!
Break:
Whether we’re ice skating or laying out on the beach this holiday season, I think it’s safe to say that school is the last thing on the South Central student body’s minds. With all of the final exams of the semester done and out of the way, everyone’s number one focus is to have fun and relax before the dreaded necessity returns to our daily rituals. Students of every age are enjoying every second of their break, even waking up earlier in the morning than they would for school! They’re all trying to squeeze out as much free time as possible before the consumption of eight hours of our day. With Christmas over, everyone patiently awaits the arrival of 2016.
While fun is a priority to students, school is still a big part of our lives on vacation. Students still attend practices to prepare for upcoming games and competitions. Other students are learning lines for the upcoming theater production in March. Although we all pretend school is the worst thing that’s ever happened to us, we still care about our grades and extracurriculars. So, until the dreaded return, we’ll squeeze every ounce of fun out of vacation! Only 12 weeks until spring break!
